My wife, son and I were travelling on I-25 south to Colorado Springs from Denver. We were scheduled to board a plane from Colorado Springs to Orange County CA for my son’s 10th birthday present (his birthday is 9/14) – a trip to Disneyland. As we were driving, we turned on the radio and began to hear the news. By the time we arrived in Colorado Springs, the airports had of course been shut down. We stayed the night at a hotel and drove back home the next day when it became apparent that air traffic would not be reopened any time soon. The anger we all felt that anyone would do such a horrible act of violence on innocent people turned into defiance. We decided that we would not allow these jihadists to change our lives and bully us into living scared. As soon as air traffic was allowed again, we boarded a plane and flew to California as a kind of f@$k you to the terrorists and celebration of our freedoms. Our son got to experience the joy only a ten-year-old kid can feel at Disneyland and that’s how our healing began.
