Even in Alaska we felt the effects of the 911 attacks. I lived in Fairbanks, about a mile from the airport. It was a beautiful warm sunny day. At about 10 am Alaska time, I was out walking the dog, when I noticed there were absolutely no planes in the sky. I thought that was strange, because normally on a weekday morning, there are flights coming and going from the airport, including commercial jets as well as small bush planes. When I got home and turned on the news, I found out what had happened. It was unbelievable! They were also announcing that no planes were allowed to fly anywhere in the country for the rest of the day. This ban actually lasted for 2 days, resulting in completely silent and empty skies in Fairbanks, and no mail or supplies for any villages not on the road system. Meanwhile, 2 hunters who had flown their own private plane out to a bush campsite were on their way back, unaware of anything. When they got near Fairbanks, they contacted the tower only to be ordered to land immediately outside the city. A military jet flew near them to make sure they did. They had no idea why till after they had landed on a dirt road and the State Troopers came and told them. Luckily they weren’t arrested. I never felt closer to New York City than I did that day. The realization that an attack like that could happen on U.S. soil was a big wake up call.
