I remember sitting in my fifth grade classroom (45 minutes north of NYC) thinking how hard fractions were. A few minutes later we went into “lockdown.” Our principal came in, briefly explained what had happened, and requested that anyone who had family in New York City come to the office. Both of my parents worked there at the time. My aunt picked me up and at that point reassured me they were okay. I can still remember hearing my mother crying on the phone as she told me she loved me, and waiting for hours as she tried and my father were stuck in the traffic surrounding the city. I had never been more afraid in my life.
