i remember being in 1st grade and i was in school of course, my father worked for the NYC department of corrections which is located on rikers island in the east river, and we lived near Franklin Square NY, and its a little fuzzy but i remember sitting together with my class for storytime or something and a teacher came in and told my teacher something and later i remember hearing some bits of info like NYC, world trade center, planes, you know, stuff like that. anyway i skip ahead to walking in the front door of my house and my mom had apparently been running on the treadmill before coming to pick me up at 2:30, and by that time every major event, save for the collapse of building 7, had already taken place. i was sitting on the couch watching the news while my mom tended to my baby brother, and i distinctly remember telling my mom that we had to call my dad at work and tell him what happened, and i am a little confused because i remember her telling me that he was off that day and he already knew, but i also remember him coming home around 5 (he usually came home around 4) and telling us that he had gotten off work and drove to the city but (either it was the national guard or the NYPD) they wouldn’t let him over the bridges, they said the bridges were all closed inbound. so then we all just sort of ate dinner and watched the news for the rest of the day.
