On the morning of September 11th, I picked up my friend Matt, cause it was my turn to drive. We were in the same classes together in S.C.C.C. (Suffolk County Community College). I remember thinking what a great day it was, school was starting the air was still warm and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. We stopped at our favorite Sunoco gas station to fill up and get smokes. It was a drive out to school and we wanted to be prepared. So we are on the hwy. listening to the radio talking about the usual stuff, when Matt said that we could stop off at the 7/11 just down the road from the school. I said that would be fine. I picked him up early so why not. We were listening to Howard Stern, when we got to the 7/11. After a commercial break Howard said a plan crashed into the World Trade Center. I started laughing, because , I mean he’s Howard Stern greatest shock jock of all time so I thought he was yanking my chain.
We get to school, now everyone is talking about it. After some time passed, our department director came into our class and said that school has been dismissed and to exit the college as safely as possible. My friend and I looked at each other, and left. The whole way home we didn’t so much as breath, you could hear a pin drop. We just kept looking at the horizon where all the dust was from the first tower falling.
We got to my house and then we saw with our own eyes the tragedy over and over as the planes crashed into the buildings. Buildings my dad took me to when I was a little boy. He would take me up to the observation deck and tell me how he walked passed these buildings as they were going up in the 60’s.
Watching them fall I cried, my friend did too. The world and especially New York was shaken that very day, it will live on in our hearts and minds , burned into our thoughts till our final breath on this earth.
But my last word in this story, dear reader, is this…………. WHY?
