They morning it happened school had already started. I was in 7th grade in Homeroom. An announcement came on the intercom advising that all students will remain in Homeroom all day. Homeroom only lasted about 20 mins and then we’d switch classes. I thought that was strange! A few minutes after between teachers gathering in the hallway, the teacher came back into the class room and refreshed our memory on emergency routine of a earth quake. Get under your desks.
Now that I’m all grown up, I know that method wouldn’t save a fly.
She then told the class what has happened.
She rolled the the tv on the stand with wheels out of the corner and turned it on the news.
The class was in silence. If a needle fell, I’m sure I would have heard it. Evenetually the tvs volume was turned down and we got to do whatever we wanted. But still it was so quiet.
Many parents of students signed their kids out that day. My father is in the Air Force and I remembe just thinking if he would be shipped out.
My parents were divorced and I have 2 other siblings. A lot I didn’t know as a middle schooler in understanding WHY it was happening but I do now.
The only days of middle school I remember Is getting braces and 9/11. I told my now 8 yrs old about 9/11, not everything but just a little so she knows the importance of that day. The ones who lost their lives.
I watched all the news, stories, history about 9/11 when Septemeber comes every year and i always feel like I’m sitting at my desk in 7th grade again….
