On September 11, 2001 I was a senior in college. My best friend Madelyn was flying back to California from New York that day. She had been visiting she sick father who lived there. She boarded her flight back to California when I got a call from her. She told me ” I’m so sorry Lily I didn’t want to ever have to say goodbye like this, but my plane is going down, and I’m not going to make it. I just wanted to tell you that I love you, and I’m honored to get to call you my best friend.” She started laughing and then said, “man I sound so cliche, but tell Michael, Grace, and Stacey I love them too. Okay Lily?”
“Okay Madelyn.”
“Alright well I just wanted to say I love you. Bye Lily.
” Bye Madelyn.”
I hung up the phone and weeped because I knew I had just lost one of the most important people in my life.
