It was around 2:30pm and I was in the 5th grade. My father was military and was stationed in Europe at the time and so we lived overseas. I remember my teacher got a phone call and her face just sank into disbelief. she seemed completely rocked and she tried to keep calm and continue to teach. About twenty minutes later she received a second call. She never told us what was going on but she just sat there after hanging up and was on the verge of tears. She just sat in silence for the last twenty minutes of class. We all thought something was wrong but didn’t think anything as tragic could have happened. My mom picked my sister and me up from school and the base was full of fully armored and armed people running around. We made it out of the gate and after a silent drive home we turned on the TV and saw the towers burning. I started to cry and my mom was just in complete disbelief. Three weeks later my dad got a call saying he had to leave and he couldn’t say where or way. Well he left for just under a year and made it back the day of my tenth birthday. Best gift ever.
