I had just come out of my photography class at Ohio University. I was walking with my friend, Liz and as we left the building, she picked up a newspaper. The story on the front page was something about a comic book store that had just closed down, and Liz said, “can you believe this?”
A girl within earshot exclaimed, “I know…its the craziest thing. I cant believe it happened either.” We both turned around, knowing she didn’t know what we were talking about, and gave her a look like, “what the hell are YOU talking about?” …then she told us. I wasnt quite sure what she was talking about. It didn’t sound real. But more people who passed us were talking about the same thing. Liz said that she was actually supposed to be going to New York that weekend for a protest. And she hoped that it wasn’t anyone involved in the protest…cause that would cripple their cause.

After the whole thing happened, I remembered a Far Side comic that showed several aged animals sitting around in the forest talking together. The caption read, “The animals in the forest could remember exactly where they were, and what they were doing when they heard the news that Bambi’s mother had been shot.” And I thought, now I have my own memory.
